Mendi Shield, Southern Highlands, Papua New Guinea. A somewhat ovoid shaped hardwood shield with a medial ridge culminating in a spike at the top. A traditional motif, showing wear from abrasion, against a background blackened with ash. The concave back shows a grip of a hemp like material which appears to be original. Edge wear but in good condition with no cracks or losses. Size 17.5" x 47" Ex. Edward Sklar collection: $1800.00.
