Guro People, Republic of the Ivory Coast. A Zamble mask of highly unusual form. This is the only example of a "Twin" Zamble mask that we have encountered or found in our research. Twin anthropoid masks are common among the Ivory Coast, Baule People and may be the source of inspiration for this Guro Carver. The small amount of well aged commercial paint on the mask suggests a Colonial period dating. The wood is dry and dark with age and oil, showing attempts at native repairs in the areas of dehydration. |
