Asian and Tribal Weapons and Shields

 

 

Ngandu and Saka of the Tshuapa River Region, Democratic Republic of the Congo, (Zaire). A basketry shield with wooden frame and parallel support slats. The basketry adorned with small dark brown quadrants at the top and bottom. The relief carved grip board is sewn into place with rattan strips. The bottom of the shield is frayed from use as well as from banging on the ground before engaging the enemy or during a war dance. First half of the 20th C. Size: Width 20" Height 54.75" .
