Asian and Tribal Weapons and Shields

Tulama People, Southwest Ethiopia. This highly convex shield called, " gatschena" used by the Christen Tulama who resided in the area surrounding the present day Addis Ababa, is seldom encountered by comparison with other Ethiopian shields. Our example is of a very thick hide, probably from the hide of a hippopotamus. The circular face is adorned with a worked phallic motif surrounded by spaced circles with a rolled and everted rim. This an old and well used shield with a sturdy half round hide handle. See Plansche and Zirngibl, African Shields, pg. 66 for additional information. Size, 22" in diameter.
