Kara Ut, Abelam People, Sepik River Papua New Guinea
Among the Abelam People, the Kara -Ut is worn by men,held between the teeth by the strings attached, while dancing and often left hanging around the neck in front or nback at other times during celebrations. The Kara-Ut is ssriking in appearance, woven of sennit fiber and hibiscus bark twine and decorated with Nasa Shells and boars tusks.
Lightly soiled and the tip of one tusk broken at some time before collection 30 years ago.
